City Manager

The City Manager ’s Office strives to ensure City services are provided in an efficient, responsible manner. Through effectively managing the City’s operating departments, the City Manager seeks to implement policies that are consistent with the preferences of Iowa City’s residents, as reflected in the direction provided by the City Council. Further, the City Manager provides Council with the information needed to make informed policy decisions.

General Fund Activities:

• The City Manager is the chief administrative officer for the City and is appointed by the City Council, managing the City’s day -to-day operations under broad policy direction from Council. The City Manager supervises the activities of all City departments and advises the City Council on matters relating to planning, development, and municipal operations. The City Manager implements policy decisions of the City Council and enforces City ordinances through the management of the City’s operating departments an d administration of the City’s personnel system. The City Manager prepares a proposed annual budget along with policy and program recommendations and submits it to the City Council for consideration and approval.
