Fire Administration The Fire Administration Division operates under the direction of the Fire Chief, who is responsible for all departmental activities as mandated by federal and state laws and City of Iowa City ordinances. The Deputy Fire Chief serves as second in command and provides oversight of operations, homeland security initiatives, fire service accreditation, major purchases, facility and grounds maintenance, and other special projects. Three Battalion Chiefs are assigned specific administrative duties, including health and safety oversight, uniform procurement, and coordination of annual physicals and immunizations. Fire Administration also manages the City’s weather alert sirens and emergency management functions. The Iowa City Fire Department aligns its goals and objectives with both the City of Iowa City Strategic Plan and the department’s own Strategic Plan, both of which are community -driven documents. The department has been accredited by the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) since August 2008, achieving reaccreditation in August 2023. The Fire Administration budget governs the acquisition, maintenance, and oversight of all resources not otherwise assigned to Emergency Operations, Fire Prevention, or Fire Training. This includes management of fixed facilities, furnishings, and resources that ensure personnel remain fit, healthy, and ready to respond 24/7. The majority of the budget is dedicated to staffing, routine station maintenance, equipment procurement, and support of the department’s wellness and fitness initiatives.
Activities:
• Fire Administration oversees all departmental activities, accreditation, facility
management, and the purchase and maintenance of computer hardware and software. The department has maintained its Class 2 rating from the Insurance Services Office (ISO), reflecting a continued commitment to operational excellence and community safety.
Recent Accomplishments:
• Submitted the accreditation annual compliance report. • Completion of the Fire Department Strategic Plan. • Successfully completed evaluation by the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) and maintain a rating of 2 (scale 1-10, lowest number is best) despite an increase in call volume and population increase since last grading period. • Remodel of Fire Staton one sleeping/showering facility. • Enhanced departmental communication through status boards in all fire stations that relay real time information to a staff. • Conducted strategized recruitment efforts in the city and increased successful hiring of underrepresented members of the community. • Completed successful contract negotiations with Local 610 resulting in a five-year term collective bargaining agreement. • Meaningful collaboration with Guidelink Center as a member of the Advisory Board. • Continued collaboration as a member of the Johnson County System of Care Group. 118
