Department Mission The mission of the Iowa City Fire Department is to protect our community by providing progressive, high-quality emergency and preventive services. Department Description The Iowa City Fire Department is dedicated to providing the community progressive, high quality emergency and preventive services. Sixty-six full-time firefighters provide fire, medical, technical rescue, and hazardous materials emergency response to approximately 75,000 residents in the 26 square-mile incorporated area of Iowa City, including the University of Iowa main campus. The department operates from four fire stations and staffs four engine companies, one truck company, and a command vehicle. The Iowa City Fire Department collaborates with many other fire protection agencies at the local, state, and federal levels. Specialty areas include: Fire Investigations, the Johnson County Hazardous Materials Response Team, and Special Operations Response Team. The Iowa City Fire Department seeks to enhance the safety of our citizens and visitors.
