The Training Division is led by the Battalion Chief of Training, reporting to the Deputy Fire Chief, and supported by a Lieutenant serving as the Training Officer. With input from the Training Committee, this team designs and delivers programs that reflect both the operational needs of the department and evolving best practices in the fire service. Training is comprehensive and dynamic, ensuring personnel are prepared for the diverse challenges of emergency response. From foundational skills in fire suppression to advanced instruction in technical rescue, hazardous materials, and emergency medical services, the Division emphasizes realism, safety, and continual improvement. Beyond technical proficiency, the Training Division fosters leadership, decision-making, and teamwork under pressure. This focus ensures that firefighters are not only capable responders but also adaptable professionals who can manage complex incidents with confidence. • Fire Training plans, develops, and coordinates in-house training programs with the support of the Training Committee. This alignment ensures that personnel train with the same tools and resources they will rely upon during emergency operations. By integrating equipment oversight with training, the Division promotes consistency, safety, and operational efficiency, while also helping to identify emerging needs and guide future purchasing decisions. • Attended career fairs at Kirkwood and Des Moines Area Community College. • Improved the capability of the live fire training center utilizing fire department members skills and abilities. • Conducted joint training with mutual aid partners at the fire training facility. • Conducting initial firefighter training for eight new members of the Iowa City Fire Department. • Focused on fire apparatus drivers training utilizing a full motion simulator owned by the State of Iowa Fire Marshal. • Collaborated with other regional hazardous materials teams allowing for a unified and cohesive approach to incident response. • Surpassed all training standards as outlined by the Iowa Department of Public Health and the Iowa State Fire Marshal.
