STRONG, STEADY & UNBREAKABLE: A 3-part series on staying active and independent as you age This series is presented by Jake Raecker, DPT, a physical therapist and fitness trainer who works to help older adults age on their own terms. Build Better Bones: The Impact of Exercise on Bone Health Thursday, Dec 4, 12-1 pm Location: Room 308 Register online or call 319-356-5220 Exercise, specifically weight-bearing and impact exercise, is critical for people wanting to maximize their bone health and avoid fractures as they age. Unfortunately, many people with low bone density, osteopenia, or osteoporosis have been told not to bend, lift, or twist, creating confusion and fear about what they can and can’t do. This class will cover why certain types of movement are helpful for bone health and how you can strengthen your bones as you age. Muscle Matters: Building Strength for Better Aging Thursday, Dec 11, 12-1 pm Location: Room 302 Register online or call 319-356-5220 As we age, muscle loss can significantly impact our health, independence, and quality of life. This engaging lecture explores practical strategies to rebuild muscle through proper nutrition and strength training, and why maintaining muscle is essential for aging well. Join us to gain actionable insights that can help you stay strong, active, and resilient at any age!

Fitness Foundations Mondays, 8:30-9 am Location: Room G13 Register online or call 319-356-5220 Instructor: Kam Atwater Work on total body strength and mobility, with a focus on proper lifting form. The class consists of both seated and standing movements, with modifications provided as needed. Join us for fun workouts and great company! Kam is a Certified Therapeutic Recreational Specialist. Fee: $8/class or $105 for 15 class punch card ($6/class or $78.75 for 15-class punch card for those with ICSC’s low-income membership); pay instructor. No class Nov 10 or Dec 29. Membership required. Slow Flow Yoga Mondays & Fridays in December, 9:15-10:15 am Location: Room G13 Register online or call 319-356-5220 Instructor: Christoph Weismayer This class starts with a slow flow warm-up and then slows down to study a few poses in greater detail with optional prop use. Then a few poses to re-energize and we conclude with passive stretches, relaxation techniques, and Savasana. Perfect for those looking for a beginning to intermediate level yoga class. Fee: $8/class or $70 for 10 classes ($6/class or $52.50 for 10 classes for those with ICSC’s low-income membership); pay instructor. The class will not meet during the month of November. This class emphasizes breathing, balance, and focus while increasing strength and flexibility. Having some prior yoga experience is helpful. New students, please attend an in-person class on a Wednesday to start. Fee: $7/class up to monthly max of $35 ($5.25/class for participants in ICSC’s low-income membership program); pay instructor. Membership required.

Attendees will learn about the different types of balance our bodies rely on, simple ways to assess your fall risk, and strategies to stay strong, stable, and confident in your movements. Whether you’re looking to reduce your risk of falls or just want to feel more secure day to day, this session will give you tools you can use right away.
