LIFELONG LEARNING This video course presents Western art from the ancient world to the present, exploring many artists and traditions. Organized around themes, rather than chronologically, individual lectures provide comparisons across time: for instance, How to Teach a Safe Yoga Class Monday-Friday, Jan 6 - Feb 26, 9:15-10:15 am Location: Room 307 (Tue, Wed, Thu) & Room G13 (Mon, Fri) Register online or call 319-356-5220 Instructor: Christoph Weismayer This class includes two morning yoga sessions on Mondays and Fridays at 9:15 am. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, we meet at the same time for workshops to discuss roughly 30 poses in greater detail and discuss sequencing and structure of a class. After around 5 weeks, participants will create a 60 minute yoga sequence using the poses and sequences learned so far. We will then practice each participant's sequence together. By the end of February, you will have the opportunity to teach your sequence in one of the morning classes in March. Fee: $300 ($225 for those with ICSC's low-income membership); pay instructor. No class Jan 19. Membership required. Understanding Western Art: Stories, Styles, and Masterworks Wednesdays, Jan 7 - Apr 1, 1-2:30 pm Location: Room 302 Register online or call 319-356-5220 Facilitator: Beth Stence the portraiture of Jan van Eyck and Andrew Wyeth, the mass produced art of Albrecht Durer and Andy Warhol, the textile art of the Bayeux Tapestry and Judy Chicago. The course delves into elements such as color, perspective and illusion, and symbols and symbolism. Attendees will also meet artists they may not have heard of. For those who took the course Lost Art, you will recognize our lecturer, Noah Charney. It promises to be a fascinating journey. Membership required.

We encourage and inspire writing your memories in your own style and voice. In the class we each read 2-3 pages of what we have written while the class listens and offers supportive comments. Sharing is optional. Membership required. Spirituality can take many forms, but it is often about how we experience connection. It can be our faith and can also be found in meditation, relationships, and nature. Every person finds their own path and it changes throughout our lives. We will explore a few different topics and share parts of our journey with each other. Membership required. “Penny’s Hill”: Iowa City History & Book Talk Tuesday, Jan 13, 2-3 pm Location: Room 302 Presenters: Dianna Penny and Marybeth Slonneger Join us for a discussion with local author Marybeth Slonneger and local activist Dianna Penny of their newly released book, Penny's Hill: A Family Story About an Escape from Slavery, Unease in East Central Iowa Before the Civil War, and Eventual Arrival of the Penny Family to Iowa City . We will trace the history of the Penny family, from Henry Penny’s miraculous escape from slavery to his grandson Fred Penny's 36-year ministerial position at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Iowa City from 1958-1994.
